Thraex Gladiator [Portrait]
Portrait of a typical Gladiator Thraex. The reconstruction is faithful and based on archaeological evidence of the props, shield, loincloth and weapons of a Thraex: curved sword [sica supina, falx] to circumvent the legionary scutum/shield or the opponent's armour, typical helmet with crest, big eyes and the head of a griffin, lorica manica, two long big greaves for two legs, a little short shield. The Serpent on the Shield is from an original typical ancient Greek painting. The Design of the Griffin Head is from an original typical ancient Greek painting: the Griffin was an animal sacred to the goddess Nemesis, avenging or punishing divinity, goddess of indignation and retribution, the patroness of gladiators [See, Round her throne flew a bird of vengeance, a Gryps (Griffin), from Nonnus, Dionysiaca 48. 375 ff]. The colour of the eyes of the Griffin is red since their, eyes are like fire [Aelian, On Animals 4. 27 (Greek natural history C2nd A.D.)]. The combination of colours blue, metal and gold as seen in many gladiators mosaics like the famous Zliten mosaic. The Arena is a little one, like those of the ludus the school for gladiators. The two poles used for the fencing exercises [the original battle] and the punishment. The colours red/white of the plaster are typical Ancient Roman Plaster colours for the buildings exterior. The Thraex is portrayed in his typical start-position, due to the special use of the curved sword, to circumvent the opponent's shield/armour and the type of body coverage given by short shield of the Thraex. All the Thraex Props and the Arena with Poles Modeled and prepared with Cinema4D. The Thraex prepared with Poser 7. Scenery and Multipass rendering with Vue 6 Infinite. Final Composite with Photoshop. Porticodoro/SmartCgArt
