The soil is a combination of carefully graded and washed regolith, enriched with human wastes and other organic matter, previously freeze-dried and sterilised by open exposure to the native environment. Out there it would be desiccated, chilled well below zero, and any remaining micro-organisms eradicated by intense solar UV radiation, unmoderated by the thin atmosphere.
