Swarm house: Performative architecture
Housing units are modulated at the molecular level. Continuous variation provides a range of gradient effect. Multiple scenarios can morph and transform to one another and produce aesthetic effects. The randomness and spontaneity are quantitified by assigning the magnitude and duration of each specific scenario. For instance, an abstract “tree” or “fabric” pattern can be generated and response the turbulence of cloud, the water flow, contingency of effects according to ecological specificity. By these content and expression, a new environmental sensibility can be achieved during the deformation of the homogenous field in real time. Thus, building is transformed into a canvas. Modular system Each housing unit, as an independent entity, is inserted into a lattice of frame structure, like "the bottles in a wine rack". Within this modular building system, large quantity of plug-in an infill housing units are fabricated and assembled. These units have a unique expression as a whole by the way of clustering, which can be “extruded” or “compressed” within the lattice grid along the normal axis and form infinite typological features. Thus, these process-driven methods produce the vertical community, green space, internal streets or the place for community service. Beyond these functionalities, spatio-temoporal organization also produces emergent behavioral effect, mixtures of different programs creating forms, various composition to represent culture experience or historical references.
