Gorgon Medusa is probably the most well known monster from Greek myth and for good reason. She was classified as a gorgon - meaning 'female monster'.
Medusa symbolizes the sexuality, intelligence and power of women. She is seductive and mysterious. She is temptation. These alluring qualities draw you closer. She plays with your mind before destroying you with one simple glance from her eyes.
My main aim for this image was to capture a strong moody atmosphere and improve my figurative skills. Despite the subject being a figure of fantasy I wanted to maintain a sense of realism and worked hard to try and capture the form, weight and texture of both snake and human skin as well as how each element would affect the other i.e. shadows and colour change.
The image originally started out far more elaborate, but it quickly became too fantastical for the aim of the picture. So during the painting process I simplified the composition, cropping the image to heighten the sense of impact and feeling of mystery.
Medusa’s eyes remain in shadow, giving us the chance to look upon her. But do not overstay your welcome!
